Washington Perspective – TRICARE 3

Saturday, March 17, 2012

AFA members, as Administration officials testify on increasing TRICARE rates, adding enrollment fees, means-testing, and (probably worst of all) indexing all of the above with “medical inflation,” it is time for your voices to be heard. We have helped prepare a statement for use in testimony by The Military Coalition later this month and perhaps early next month. You can find the statement by clicking HERE.

Secondly, the AFA Board of Directors essentially approved the AFA Veterans and Retiree Council recommendations as our official position. You can find the position by clicking HERE. Additionally, the Board also suggested that the commission DOD has recommended to look at retirement, also look at total compensation, to include health care benefits (and that it not be “BRAC-like").

If you are so inclined, we’d like you to send letters supporting these positions to each of your Senators and to your local Representative. We have drafted three example letters: 1) Short Version, 2) Medium Length, and 3) Long Version.

We’d ask you to adjust the letters to fit your personal circumstances and mail them, using the post office, to their district offices. As I have mentioned to many of you, most emails don’t get read – there are just too many of them. Additionally, mail to the Washington, DC offices go through special handling procedures and may take as long as 3 weeks to arrive. Thirdly, mail received in the district indicates you are a constituent whose voice needs to be heard. Note of Advice: if you are active duty or currently serving on active duty as a guard or reserve member, I recommend (1) you do not add your rank to the letter or (2) don’t send a letter. Most letters to Members of Congress by currently serving military get sent to their parent service to be answered...

For your consideration.
